A Red-Letter Day...or Two
On Tuesday morning this week, I dragged myself out of bed. I had to be at work at 10:30 that day, but before work, I had a shop at McDonald's. I have been doing secret shops for a couple of years, and pick up shops every now and again. This was a breakfast shop, which meant I had to be at McDonald's before 9am. I took the train one stop, and as I came out of the station, I saw a dollar bill laying on the ground. At first glance, I knew it was not a one-dollar-bill. I thought it might be $100. Just as I bent over to pick it up, the wind blew it across the plaza, but don't worry--I caught it. It turned out to be a $10 bill, which was ten dollars more than I had, so it was good.
I finished the shop, and made my notes. I got back on the train and headed to work. I knew I would be a little bit early, but there is always something to see or do in the City, even if it's only for 10 or 20 minutes. When I got to the Terminal, I found that Robitussin had set up a display in the Vanderbilt Room with free massages. You can bet I sat down and got a 10-minute massage before I had to be at work. It was fantastic! Even though the masseuse said she wouldn't be, I hope she's back next week. I am happy every day when I get up, because I get to go into New York City and work at Grand Central Terminal. This particular day was even better with a massage and a pocket full of cash. But, it got even better!
My boss is tough, but it's because she thinks I can do better than I do. I can do better, but I...wait, this isn't about how I do my job, it's about another part of a great day. I took my lunch break a little bit early that day, and when I got back, Pam, the boss, asked why I had taken my break so early. I explained my reasons, but she said I shouldn't have done that. We went on through the day, and a couple hours later, she looked at me and said, "I told you earlier that you shouldn't have taken your break early, but now I think that was a good idea. I was wrong. You were right." I said, "I'm sorry, I didn't hear?" She looked at me and refused to repeat it. I asked a customer if he had heard what she said, and he said he had. I felt really good after she said that, and had to include it in my fantastic day.
A couple people commented on Facebook, saying they would like some of my good-day mojo or they wanted to have just one of my days. My answer, though it's cliche, was to find something you love to do, and do it! It makes every day better when you are doing something you love. It also has a lot to do with attitude. Whatever situation you find yourself in, try to be satisfied with it-try to find the silver lining.
One person suggested that with my great day, I should play the lottery. I took the $10-bill I found and bought some tickets, but alas, I didn't win. Not a penny. But, at that point, a little thing like that could not ruin my better-than-most day.
I am so lucky to be living in Jersey City, and working in New York. I realize that I get to do something and live somewhere many of my friends want to be. Yesterday, I walked from 34th St to the World Trade Center along the Hudson River. It was probably close to two miles. The day was beautiful and it was so nice to just stroll and look. I have a couple of ideas for walks that I can write about, I just need to find the time to do them. Stay tuned for updates!
